Shabbat is an invaluable gift for my family—the gift that keeps giving each and every week. It provides us with the perfect opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and deepen our connections.

In our modern, fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with responsibilities, worries, and never-ending to-do lists. The lighting of the candles on Friday evening, however, signals the start of twenty-five hours of ‘renewal of social capital’ as Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z’’l once put it. It offers us the opportunity to set aside our individual worries and preoccupations, embrace togetherness and focus on cultivating relationships .

The significance of Shabbat extends far beyond religious observance; it is deeply rooted in Jewish thought and tradition. It is about sanctifying time, creating a sacred space in our busy lives for reflection, renewal, and connection.

The Jewish secular writer Achad Ha’am beautifully emphasized Shabbat's role as a gift to humanity, writing, ‘more than the Jewish people have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jewish people.’ These words highlight how Shabbat has been a cornerstone of Jewish identity and survival throughout history. Even in the face of adversity and dispersion, Shabbat has provided us with a source of strength, unity, and spiritual nourishment.

Throughout the years, Shabbat has served as a spiritual anchor, reminding us of our shared heritage and values. It is a time to pause, step back from the frenetic pace of life, and connect with our roots and with each other. Rabbi Sacks writes ‘societies need civic time when we cultivate the relationships that constitute the third realm that is neither the market nor the state.’ In a world that often emphasizes productivity and material pursuits, Shabbat offers a counterbalance, teaching us the importance of the intangible aspects of life, such as family, community, and inner reflection.

Shabbat is a time to celebrate, to sing, to pray, and to be with one another. The Shabbat table becomes a gathering place for generations, sharing stories and values. In our home, it has become a tradition for all seated around the Shabbat table to share their ‘highlight of the week’ or their moment of gratitude.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Early Learning Centre (ELC) Shabbat celebration. Watching the pure joy and excitement in our young children's eyes as they eagerly anticipated Shabbat reinforced the profound impact this day has on nurturing happiness and contentment in our lives. The anticipation they displayed is a reminder that Shabbat is a celebration of family and togetherness.

Today, our Year 10 and 11 students have embarked on their Pathways Camp experience. My message to them was to make the most of every moment, but in particular Shabbat —to use it as a time of growth and discovery, to connect with each other, to embrace its holiness, to pause, breathe, and fully appreciate its beauty.

I wish everyone a heartfelt Shabbat Shalom. May we all be blessed to embrace the gift of Shabbat, to be fully present in the company of others, to put aside the distractions of the outside world, focus on what truly matters, and create authentic connections.

We have been fortunate to have had a very busy but successful start to the new term, with several important events marked in our own Masada way.

Tisha B’Av was one such event. A time for commemoration and togetherness for our students and teachers as we considered the lessons learned from the destruction of the temples. Our students participated in a solemn ceremony, with an opportunity to hear from guest speakers, hear kinot (poems) and reflect on lessons learned.

The end of the Omer period brings us opportunities to celebrate and spread joy! We celebrated Tu B’av with messages of gratitude, appreciation, friendship and love for one another.

Our Pathways Camps are here! The much anticipated Pathways camps are always a highlight for our students. The Jewish Life team will be joined by local and Israeli madrichim as they participate in innovative and refreshed programs. We hope that all of our students take the opportunity to build a renewed sense of purpose, connection and commitment to community.

In and amongst all of these activities we have the HSC Trial Exams, Year 11 Exams, Orals and Performances and the incredible Visual Arts/Design and Technology and HSC Showcase.

Later this term we will mark RU OK Day?, celebrate Rosh Hashanah and say our final farewells to our Year 12 graduates of 2023.

Embrace Punctuality: A Key to Success

During school assemblies in the Junior School, we have engaged in meaningful discussions about both attendance and punctuality. While we understand that staying home when unwell is essential, we have emphasised the importance of being punctual to school. Here are some compelling reasons why punctuality matters:

1. Respect for Learning and Education
Punctuality in schools signifies respect for the learning process and the value of education. When students arrive on time, they demonstrate their understanding of the significance of their studies and show appreciation for the efforts made by teachers and school staff in preparing engaging and enriching lessons.

2. Maximising Learning Opportunities
Being punctual allows students to fully benefit from the wealth of learning opportunities provided by our curriculum. When they arrive on time, they can actively engage in all aspects of their studies, participate in class discussions, and collaborate effectively with their peers.

3. Establishing Responsible Habits
Forming punctuality habits at a young age may lay the foundation for responsible behaviour in the future. Students who learn to be punctual in school are more likely to develop strong time management skills, which are crucial for balancing academic commitments, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities throughout their educational journey and beyond.

4. Reduced Disruptions in the Classroom
Late arrivals can disrupt the flow of a lesson, causing distractions not only for the late student but also for their classmates and teachers. Punctuality minimises interruptions, allowing teachers to maintain an organised and focused learning environment. This ensures that all students have an equal opportunity to learn and succeed.

In light of the importance of punctuality, our Junior School leaders have taken proactive steps to encourage and reward students for being punctual. They have introduced a new initiative where a prize is awarded at assembly to the most punctual class of the week. The winning class will have the privilege of hosting our beloved Toucan bird, fondly named 'Muffin,' in their classroom for the week. Our leaders have also explained the wisdom behind the saying ‘The early bird catches the worm’ during an assembly and serves as a reminder of the benefits of seizing opportunities. They are also considering ways to reward students who are punctual every day.

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about the support provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2022).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government NCCD includes:

• year of schooling,
• category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
• level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial, or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

• formally recognise the support and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
• consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
• develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified - the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. The Early Learning children have had the most amazing hands on experience watching the whole lifecycle of a duck. The program started with a thinking routine of what do you see, think and wonder. The children explained that they saw eggs, they thought the eggs belonged to many different things such as our naughty cockatoo birds, worms and butterflies. The children wondered what would hatch from these eggs, some saying with excitement it's a possum, dinosaur and crocodile. The excitement that the children shared once they saw the egg hatch was so powerful. The children then thought this was a chicken, duck or cockatoo. Over the 2 weeks the children got to watch their transformation from an egg to a duckling. They watched the feathers dry, held them, fed them and watched them swim. This hands-on experience is a great way to share intentional teaching and the love and care for friends and animals. The value of kindness and respect was evident throughout this experience. We look forward to being able to share some more of these experiences with the children.

It was such a beautiful afternoon, where the Blue and Green room children got to experience having lunch with our Year 5 students. This is an integral part of our school readiness program where the children have the unique opportunity to start building connections with their buddies for 2024. The children embrace the time to sit and eat lunch together and then colour in together and read books. By providing this opportunity termly it allows time for the connection to be fostered in a natural way. The smiles on both the ELC children and Year 5 students tells its own story.

A highlight of the Early Learning Centre is when we are able to showcase our learning of Shabbat with our friends and family. The children are able to share what they experience every week. Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest where we attend synagogue and spend time with our family. We talk about the traditions that we partake in on Shabbat and explain how Hashem created the world in 7 days. Having the opportunity to share this with families and friends is unforgettable and we love having our extended Masada community in the centre to share these wonderful experiences. The children also made a special Challah Cover to take home and share at their own Shabbat table as a reminder of what we do in the Early Learning Centre all the time.

This term there are a number of exciting events on the calendar to be celebrated. The Year 1 Siddur Presentation and Kindergarten Shabbat Experience are a highlight for those year groups.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will be a focus during Jewish Studies and Torah Stream classes, along with immersive activities that will consolidate students' learning and what they will share at home with their families. We look forward to sharing these upcoming events with our community.

The beginning of Term 3 brings new initiatives and exciting events.

In Year 6 we have begun our history unit. This term the Year 6’s will be working on a Living Historians project. Throughout the project, we will hear stories from survivors of the Holocaust, which is a tragic but important moment in our history. By hearing their stories, we get to pass the stories on to the next generation and continue their legacies. “If we were to forget, it would be an insult to the victims.” - Eddie Jaku, a holocaust survivor.

Throughout this year, the current school and sport captains have noticed that many students have been coming late to prayers, so we have decided to create a system in which each class will be competing for a token and a stuffed Toucan named Muffin each week. This will be awarded to the most punctual class each week. These tokens can be traded in for a variety of rewards at the end of the year, such as a Mufti Day or an extended lunch time. We have already seen a reduction in the amount of late notes, which is our overall aim. Hopefully this will continue.

We cannot wait for the exciting adventures that await us in Term 3.

In Week 2, Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to demonstrate their hard work in the ensemble classroom for their peers and parents during assembly. The Guitar and Ukulele Ensemble introduced the audience to the concept of ‘cacophony’ through their class-composed piece, Who I Am. In this performance, each student had the opportunity to share their unique musical voice, combining their individual ideas into a layered rock-style piece. Next, the String Ensemble played The Silver Forest by Stephen Chin, in which they demonstrated impressive technical and ensemble skills. The Mallet Percussion Ensemble performed an exciting arrangement of Imagine Dragons’ Believer, where the students have been working towards learning more complex melodies and performing works with multiple parts. Finally, Band showcased their percussion section in the exciting Drums of Corona by Michael Sweeney. The Music Department is incredibly proud of how far the students have come this year, and are looking forward to hearing them perform again later this semester.

Year 2 visited the Glen Street Theatre to watch Grace, Luke and Billy travel around Australia with their parents in a very small campervan. The children laughed out loud as they watched the siblings squabble over space and repeatedly ask, “Are we there yet?”. We learnt about the various tourist attractions in Australia and discovered that traveling with your family is difficult at times but also wonderful.

The Year 3 and 4 students travelled by bus to the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta on Thursday 20th July. There, the students saw a play called ‘The Twits’ from the amazing mind of Roald Dahl. It was full of talented acting, crazy costumes and detailed props.

My favourite part was the dancing in the kitchen with the funny, cool moves.

I loved the Roly-Poly Bird! It was colourful and all of the costumes were incredible.

I really liked it when they introduced the gruesome Mr Twit and Mrs Twit.

The show was visually spectacular and we would rate it a 5 out of 5!

In Week 1, the Year 6 class were privileged to be able to go to the Sydney Jewish Museum. There we met a Holocaust survivor Tom Fleming and we were able to listen to his story. We also asked Eddie Jaku, ‘The Happiest Man on Earth' and Olga Horak questions of our choice using AI versions of themselves. We were taken on a guided tour around the museum and learnt about Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass and 1000 Jewish People that lost their lives using guns to shoot off the Nazis at the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland.

Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 recently exhibited their artworks at ‘The Gallery’ at St Ives Shopping Village. Year 4 showcased a collection of artworks ranging from zoomed-in close-up flower paintings inspired by Giorgio O’Keefe, to more abstract style artworks of circle compositions

Using different colour schemes in the style of Sonia Delaunay, Year 5 exhibited works showing their visual interpretations of Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series by painting their own designs on canvas boards. They also presented mixed-media landscape pieces consisting of tissue paper, bark and charcoal in the style of Fred Williams’s contemporary landscape pieces.

Finally, Year 6 exhibited a combination of detailed tonal self-portraits as well as watercolour and ink silhouette portraits which consisted of well-known landmarks.

All of the artworks listed above were highly impressive and showcased the creative talents of Junior School students at Masada College.

Our SRC representatives coordinated a fundraiser for a very special little boy named Elisha. Elisha has Prader-Willi Syndrome and his parents are raising awareness for PWS research.

The Prader-Willi Research Foundation Australia aims to transform the lives of people with PWS, and their families. It is hoped that by raising awareness and sharing Elisha's story, every donation is a step closer to identifying and using the best possible treatments to help families whose futures are turned upside-down by a PWS diagnosis.

On Friday 16th June, all Junior School students came to school in orange mufti to show support for the 'Go Orange for PWS' campaign. Every child gave a donation of a gold coin or more in support. The SRC students had a variety of activities on offer during lunch and a donation of $370 was made. Elisha’s family are so grateful for the support of the Masada College students.

We are thrilled to share the remarkable journey of our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh group, who recently embarked on a challenging two-day hiking expedition from Audley Weir to Wattamolla Beach in the Royal National Park! Amidst the breathtaking natural landscape and picturesque scenery, our students truly embraced the essence of outdoor exploration. This expedition has proven to be a transformative experience, fostering growth in organisation, teamwork, and resilience among the participants! We commend their determination and congratulate them on this achievement. Thank you, Miss Kirkpatrick and Mr Yau, for attending the trip and giving up your time.

At the SSER camp, students engaged in comprehensive lessons on safety measures in sports and recreation. Through expert-led workshops and hands-on demonstrations, they understand the importance of proper safety checks, mitigating hazards and risks by implementing control measures and first aid actions. Additionally, the camp fostered a culture of responsibility and teamwork, empowering the students to look out for each other's wellbeing during physical activities. Ultimately, the students acquired the knowledge and confidence to enjoy sports and recreation with a strong emphasis on safety.
